Pylos is yet another strategy title from the folks at Fundex/Gigamic, makers of Quarto, Quoridor, Quixo and Skybridge. I bought this game a few years ago and have rolled it out regularly at small gatherings ever since as a quick but thoughtful game of logical reasoning.
Gameplay is simple. Players take turns placing spheres of alternate colors on top of the game board in an attempt to form a pyramid. Whoever places the last sphere on the very top wins the game. However, there are different maneuvers which allow you to retract pieces from the board, saving up your spheres in an effort to outlast your opponent and use your pieces last. It takes mere minutes to learn, one round to understand, and many, many hours of gameplay to really dig deep into the strategies and become a master player. As such it is recommended for strategy newcomers and veteran chess players alike.
Like all of the titles from Fundex/Gigamic, Pylos consists of all solid wooden pieces that are as attractive as they are functional. The game looks fine as a decorative object if left out but stores easily in a sturdy box that will survive years of shelfwear.
People who like this game might also like Pentago, Abalone, Othello and any of the above mentioned Fundex/Gigamic titles. |
