Saikoro is an amazing 2-player strategy game that we here at Uncle's imported from England. The board is broken-up in to an 8-pocket by 8-pocket grid. 62 of these pockets have a die in them and the remaining 2 squares have solid cubes. Play starts with putting the lid over the game and shaking it to randomize the board. From there, players take turns moving. The rules are very simple.
1. Players must move their piece to a square occupied by a die. Upon landing, the die is removed.
2. To stop on a square, the player must move through the exact number of squares (including the stopping point) as the number on the die
indicates.
3. Players are not allowed to cross over empty squares, their opponent's square, to cross their own path, or to move diagonally.
4. Players must end their move no more than 6 squares from their opponent (diagonal distances not allowed).
5. The first player who can not find a legal move loses.
The rules are simple enough, but play is very dynamic. Saikoro has the feel of a wrestling match. Bound together by the six-square-distance rule, players end up circling each other. Since the dice are removed off the board as play proceeds, each move made drastically limits the options remaining. The strategy of the game is in trapping your opponent, but one missed move may seal your playing piece in your own trap. The game is fast and brilliant. No two games are the same. |
