Puerto Rico is an exciting economics game, taking place in the year 1543. The winner of this game is the player who can create the most profitable plantation. There are five different crops available: indigo, corn, coffee, sugar, and tobacco. This game implements variable phase order, in that each round, players choose different occupations to best suit their needs (different occupations effect the turn order). The following is a list of the roles that players chose from each time: trader, settler, builder, craftsman, captain, or mayor. As each of these allow for privileges unique to their role, players must chose wisely each round. It is the player that can best manage the changing roles for his/her specific goals, that will prove his/her adaptability, therefore improving the chance to win. Players must erect buildings, establish plantations, produce goods, and either sell or transport the goods. The player with the most victory points wins the game.

Puerto Rico has won several international awards, as well as the Meeples' Choice Award for 2002. True to the manufacturer, the components are well designed, visually aesthetic, and fit well with the time period.

My three sons (ages 18, 22 and 23) just spent a weekend playing this great game and I can whole-heartedly recommend it to any serious game player. The only "luck" involved in the game is what your opponents do or don't do and an occasional draw of a commodity. It was hard to determine who was going to win until the very last round and even then you weren't sure until you added up all the victory points and in the case of a tie the gold pieces. It is a great way to spend 1-2 hours with a few of your game loving friends. We kept wanting to play it again and again.
