As in Jules Verne's famous story, the players in Around the World in 80 Days are members of a London Club at the beginning of the 20th century who bet each other on a round-the-world journey. Whoever can complete the journey in less than 80 days will win the bet and the accolades of his comrades. To accomplish this, the players will have to make good use of train and ship travel as they move from place to place. Along the way, they may have the opportunity to speed their travels with balloons and elephants. However, they must also avoid the over-zealous detective, who will slow their progress if he can catch up with them for interrogations in the places they visit. Naturally, events outside the control of the players may also play a part.

I got a chance to play Around the World in 80 Days, which many believe will be this year’s German Game of the Year. It is a great game where a player tries to go around the world visiting 10 or so cities on the way, in less days than everyone else using combinations of train and ship cards. Each turn a players gets to choose a card and does an associated with it action (take gold, move investigator, take an event card or some other goodies) then he has to chose whether he would like to move on to the next city using the cards from his hand (each card has a number of days that it uses up attached to it) or if he wants to chill in the city he is already in and wait for a better hand. The game has a space time continuum issue, so if you are the first person to go around the world on the board it doesn’t mean that you will win the game as some one else can easily come 2nd, 3rd, or 4th and waster less days due to better use of cards. However, being the first one on the board does make the mother guys lose days so it does have its pluses. Also being first or last in any giver city gives you a bonus chip with goodies which also effects the strategies greatly as do the event cards you can earn in order to do stuff.
It is overall a great game. Good for beginning players of German games as well as experienced ones. The game it most reminds me of is Ticket to Ride, but in my humble opinion it has a better replay value.
