This game is part of the Carcassonne series, however, it is a stand alone game. Carcassonne - Hunters and Gatherers takes place before the city of Carcassonne was established (during the stone-age), when people lived in small groups that hunted animals, fished the streams, and gathered the nuts and berries of the land. Players of this game assemble the prehistoric scene with tiles illustrating lakes, rivers, forests, and grasslands. Members of the tribe are sent out to forage for food by various means. This version is played similarly to the original Carcassonne yet with some new options.

Carcassonne – Hunters and Gatherers

Hunters and Gatherers is a gorgeous variant to the 2001 Speil des Jahres winner, Carcassonne. The play style is similar to its predecessor, but with a few additions and differences. With this new game, you get stone-age equivalents to most of the aspects of the original, along with fishing huts, which let you control a whole system of rivers. It is beautiful, with an almost impressionist art design that was inspired by cave paintings found in the Carcassone region of France. This game is a 2 to 5 player game, but I think it excels as a 2 player game. My husband has mostly given up on games except for video games, but this is his favorite of my “old school” games. It requires strategy, but with 2 players it is light enough for conversation. More players make for more complex games, so if you want it a little heavier, it is a great 4 player game. I haven't played it with five yet, so I can't report on 5 player games. I highly recommend this game for just about anyone. It is easy enough for younger players, and a great game for grown-ups. This is my favorite game to play as well as to recommend. And it's worth it to mention that I have not had a single person come back to our stores and tell me they didn't like it.
